BARGAINING BULLETIN #4 JANUARY 2009

BC INTERIOR USW WOOD COUNCIL

BUILDING POWER WITH CAT TEAMS

The five BC Interior local unions are in the process of putting in place the USW Building Power program in preparation for upcoming BC Interior negotiations. The main focus of Building Power is the development of Communication & Action Teams (CATs) in the Local Unions and in each individual mill or operation.

What is CAT all about?

The Communication & Action Teams are a means of communication with union members. The goals of the CAT teams are:
• Establish a line of communication from the bargaining committee to the members;
• Provide a means of getting the members’ concerns to the bargaining committee;
• Get the right information to the membership in a timely and accurate fashion; and
• Building participation and solidarity among the membership and between the five Interior local unions.

Your local union and plant committees are being trained on Building Power and CAT’s and your Provincial Negotiating Committee believes it is a great way to build power, unity and ensure there is a flow of information in the Union.

The success of CAT’s and the Building Power program is membership participation.

Your local union and plant committees will be looking for members to be CAT organizers on shifts and to help set-up the communication network. Please advise your plant chair person if you are interested in participating.
